The Agrihood Network, an initiative stemming from the Food Away From Home Association (FoodAwayFromHome.org), is a growing community designed to meet the unique needs of agrihoods nationwide. An agrihood is a community built around a working farm, where residents have direct access to local, sustainable food sources, often with the goal of promoting healthy living and environmental stewardship. As the network evolves into a trade association, it aims to support agrihood developers by providing resources in areas such as vendor and supplier connections, insurance, promotions, lobbying efforts, and the development of retail and food service concepts. The Agrihood Network is also collaborating with marketing agencies, lumber and hardware companies, and other essential partners to foster growth and innovation within this sustainable living model.
An Agrihood is an organized community that integrates agriculture into a residential neighborhood. [1] The purpose of these communities is to facilitate food production while at the same time providing recreation for members of the community. The trend of moving to agrihoods has been noted by a-number of sources to be more common among millennials. As of May 2020, there are 90 agrihoods in the United States with another 27 planned.
In 2014, the term “agrihood” was first introduced by Southern California-based development company Rancho Mission Viejo to target millennials who wanted to be closer to fresh food to their development.
Agrihoods are based around the concept of integrating farms and gardens into neighborhoods, or vice versa, allowing for the development of residential neighborhoods that have a rural feel. Integrating agriculture into neighborhoods also allows for communities to supply themselves with locally-produced food. Most of this food production is heavily influenced by organic and sustainable agriculture.
Some agrihoods are created by nonprofits, rather than developers, to focus on food insecurity in historical neighborhoods as a revitalization technique.
